Preparing for Consultation

A little preparation helps the consultation run smoothly and gives more time for discussion. The guidance below is general. Personalised instructions provided by our rooms always take precedence.

What to bring

  • Your current referral from your GP or treating doctor.
  • A list of your current medications, including doses, and any allergies.
  • Relevant reports or results that have not already been sent to the rooms, such as pathology, imaging or previous endoscopy reports.
  • Your Medicare card, and private health fund details if applicable.
  • Any concession or pension card, if relevant to your billing.

Preparing a short symptom timeline

It helps to note when your symptoms began, how they have changed, what makes them better or worse, and any treatments already tried. A few written lines are often more useful than trying to recall detail during the appointment.

Writing down your questions

Bringing a short list of questions ensures the points that matter most to you are covered. There is no need to prepare anything formal. A note on your phone or a piece of paper is enough.

Bringing someone with you

You are welcome to bring a family member, carer or support person. Many people find it helpful to have a second listener, particularly when results or treatment options are being discussed.

What usually happens during the consultation

  • A discussion of your symptoms, medical history and priorities.
  • An examination where appropriate, explained beforehand, with your consent.
  • A review of any results, imaging or previous procedures.
  • A discussion of what is known, what may still need to be confirmed, and the reasonable options available to you.

Fasting and bowel preparation

No fasting or bowel preparation is required for a standard consultation unless our rooms have specifically instructed it. If preparation is needed for a planned procedure, written instructions will be provided in advance.

Instructions from the rooms take precedence

Where anything on this page differs from the instructions given to you directly by our practice team, please follow the instructions from the rooms. If you are unsure, contact us before your appointment.
