Preparing for Surgery

Careful preparation helps the operation proceed smoothly and supports a faster recovery. The information below complements the personalised instructions given at consultation.

Consent and decision making

At consultation we discuss the proposed operation, the alternatives, the expected benefits and the potential risks. Time is allowed for questions and, where helpful, a second consultation can be arranged.

Pre-admission assessment

Most patients have a pre-admission clinic appointment to review medications, fitness for anaesthetic and any further investigations required. Bring a current list of medications, allergies and any recent test results.

Medications and lifestyle

  • Continue most regular medications unless specifically advised otherwise.
  • Blood thinners and certain diabetic medications may need adjustment.
  • Stop smoking as early as possible before surgery.
  • Maintain general fitness and balanced nutrition in the weeks beforehand.

The day before

Follow the fasting and bowel preparation instructions provided. Pack a small overnight bag with comfortable loose clothing, toiletries and a list of medications. A responsible adult should be available to take you home after discharge.

On the day of surgery

You will be admitted to the hospital ward or day surgery unit. The team will confirm your details, review consent and prepare you for theatre. The anaesthetist will discuss the anaesthetic plan and pain management.

After the operation

You will wake in the recovery area before transferring to the ward. The nursing team will help with mobilising, eating and drinking. Early movement is one of the most important things you can do to support recovery.
